Coherent Moves to Hold as the Price Catches Up With Fair Value
Coherent is downgraded from Buy to Hold. The thesis is intact; the rating changes because the price rose while the discount rate rose again. The stock closed at $295.83 on 25 September, 11.0% above the $266.50 of the 15 September report. The probability-weighted fair value falls from $327 to $315, leaving about 6.5% of upside against 22.5% a fortnight ago. For a high-risk name with negative free cash flow and a 2.10 beta, that margin is too thin to support a Buy.
Why the fair value came down
The previous report said exit multiples would be trimmed if long yields kept rising under a hawkish Fed. They did. The Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%-4.00% on 16 September, and the 10-year Treasury yield moved from 4.999% to 5.17%, after touching 5.18%, the highest since 2007. The bull and base exit multiples fall from 43x and 33x to 41x and 32x. Earnings cases and probabilities are unchanged: bull 30% at roughly $430, base 50% at $310 and bear 20% at $155. The forward P/E is now 30.5x, against 27.5x at the last report.
The downgrade does not hinge on the multiple trim. Without it, fair value would sit at about $327, still only 10.4% above the price. The composite score eases from 62.7 to 62.2, with Valuation cut from 6 to 5 and Technical Setup raised from 3 to 5.
What happened to the Buy levels
The $238 stop was never tested; the lowest close since 15 September was $271.17. The previous entry range of $262-$282, the stop and the $390 and $440 take-profit targets are all withdrawn. No stop or targets are published for a Hold.
What would restore the Buy
The first route is price: a pullback to about $263, which restores a 20% margin to fair value and sits between the 200-day exponential average near $269.86 and the 3 September low of $255.25. The recomputed 200-day simple average is $286.16 and the 40-week average is $290.30. The second is evidence: September-quarter operating cash flow clearly improving on the $79.51m of fiscal 2026. Results are expected in early November, though the company has not yet confirmed the date.
The PhotonLink launch
On 21 September Coherent launched PhotonLink, its integrated-optics platform. The company cites more than ten co-packaged and more than ten near-packaged customer engagements, with anchor customers and long-term agreements secured, and management expects revenue to begin ramping in calendar Q4 2026. No customers or volumes were named, so the report rates it Medium impact: it confirms an existing timeline.
