Broadcom Cut to Watchlist as the $342 Stop Fires

Broadcom Inc.AVGOReports

Broadcom moves from Buy to Watchlist. The 15 September report set a $342 cut-loss and stated that a close below it would exit the position and move the rating to Watchlist. The shares closed at $339.27 that day and $339.51 on 16 September, with an intraday low of $335.81. The rule fired. The probability-weighted fair value falls from $430 to $406 and the investment score from 77.5 to 77.0, against a 25 September close of $352.81.

Q: Why not reinstate the Buy with a lower stop?

A: The stop had already been lowered from $350 to $342, and the previous report declined to move it a third time. Resetting it into the low $330s after a breach would turn a written rule into a suggestion. A 5.1% bounce is not trend repair.

Q: Did anything else change besides the price?

A: Rates moved against the previous report’s reopening condition of falling yields and a Fed pause. Instead the Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%-4.00% on 16 September, and the 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.18% on 24 September, the highest since 2007, before closing the week at 5.17%. Exit multiples fall one turn. Bull is now $529 at 26% probability, base $424 at 50% and bear $235 at 24%. In the scorecard, Risk falls from 4 to 3 and Technical Setup rises from 2 to 3.

Q: What pushed Risk lower?

A: Customer financing. Bloomberg reported on 20 August, and CNBC on 21 August, a second package of $60bn to $70bn of senior debt plus about $30bn junior, with Broadcom guaranteeing part of the senior tranche. Broadcom has not confirmed it; on the 2 September call the CFO said there were “no announcements” on further tranches. The FT, via Reuters, also reported on 23 September that China’s SASAC had surveyed Broadcom switch use in state-backed data centres. The European Commission’s VMware inquiry remains preliminary.

Q: Is the business the problem?

A: No. Fiscal third-quarter results on 2 September showed revenue of $29.59bn and free cash flow of $13.67bn. Management still expects to exceed $30 of earnings per share in fiscal 2028, and fourth-quarter gross margin is guided to about 73%. This is risk control and a harder rate backdrop, not a broken thesis.

Q: What brings it back to Buy?

A: A close above about $369, the recomputed 200-day simple average of $368.35. A fresh Buy would come with new levels and a stop beneath the $335.81 structural low. No entry, stop or targets are published while on Watchlist. Fourth-quarter results are expected mid-December, date not yet announced.
