AppLovin Moves From Buy to Watchlist After Its Cut-Loss Triggers
AppLovin now carries a Watchlist rating, down from Buy. The reason is risk discipline, not a weaker business. The 29 September report published a cut-loss at $284 and spelled out the exit trigger in advance: a close below that level on volume above the twenty-day average. On 1 October both conditions were met. The shares closed at $281.31 on about 8.0 million shares, against a twenty-day average of 4.85 million, after trading as low as $275.13, a new 52-week low. The report honours the stop as published rather than moving it.
The damage built over several sessions. The stock has posted eight straight lower closes and is down 14.8% since 21 September, and 8.7% below the $308.24 close cited in the last report. The base between $297.50 and $300.09, which had held two tests, gave way first with a close of $290.43 on 30 September. The cut-loss went a day later.
Two items weighed on sentiment in that stretch. Wells Fargo, which rates the stock Equal Weight with a $325 target, argued on 30 September that the recent spike in e-commerce pixel installs came mostly from Asia-Pacific Shopify storefronts with little or no traffic, and placed a genuine e-commerce turn in 2027. AppLovin also went after Unity over data collection by Unity’s Ad Quality software kit, with an arbitration demand on 27 September, a court petition on 28 September and a hearing on 30 September. No ruling has been reported. Securities class action filings also continue, with a lead-plaintiff deadline of 16 November.
None of this changes the valuation. Fair value stays at $476, built from scenarios of $700, $483 and $238 weighted 25%, 50% and 25%. That implies about 69% upside from the last close, at roughly 16.9 times fiscal 2026 earnings per share of $16.67. The composite score slips to 73 from 75, with Risk down to 5 from 6 and Technical down to 3 from 5. A rating that resets its stop after it fires offers readers no discipline.
The Buy levels are withdrawn in full: the $300 to $335 entry range and the take-profit targets of $420 and $475. There are two routes back to Buy. The first is price, a close back above $300 on above-average volume. The second is evidence. Third-quarter results, expected on 4 November although the date is not yet announced, need to meet the $2.055bn to $2.085bn revenue guide and show model uplift resuming. A second light quarter would point toward Avoid instead.
