Technical read (chart only): Confirms as of Verdict Buy from fundamentals; the chart alone confirms it, a pullback within an uptrend above a rising 200-day average, so acting inside the $825-$870 range is supported, and a close below the 200-day average would end that read. The Buy verdict comes from the fundamentals alone. The technical read looks only at the price chart. It does not change the verdict or the score and only guides entry timing.
Investment Scorecard
Composite score 72/100 (previous 73.8). Every factor is scored out of 10, ten always being the best outcome, including for risk.
| Factor | Score | Weight | Change | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Quality | 7/10 | 15% | -1 vs last report | Record 87.0% non-GAAP gross margin and contracted HBM, but a commodity cycle; profit-linked pay now scales labour cost with the cycle. |
| Financial Strength | 9/10 | 15% | -1 vs last report | Net cash of $68.3bn and fiscal 2026 adjusted free cash flow of $62.31bn; capex steps up sharply in fiscal 2027 and the new bonus pool takes a share of what is left. |
| Competitive Advantage | 7/10 | 15% | unchanged | HBM position and custom HBM4E work with NVIDIA; a 6F2 roadmap against CXMT's 4F2 claim, which still has no disclosed yield or customer. |
| Management | 7/10 | 10% | -1 vs last report | Guidance and capital return delivered, but the Taiwan dispute reached a warning strike and a global bonus plan was conceded under pressure, with Taoyuan still open. |
| Growth Potential | 7/10 | 15% | -1 vs last report | Fiscal 2027 revenue expected to roughly double, but the two-year window holds a fiscal 2028 at risk and AI spending now faces funding questions. |
| Valuation | 8/10 | 20% | unchanged | 4.9x consensus fiscal 2027 EPS; probability-weighted value $1,065 is 24.3% above the price. |
| Risk (10 = lowest risk) (10 = lowest risk) | 4/10 | 10% | unchanged | Cyclical earnings near a peak, most DRAM output in Taiwan, CXMT, and AI-funding stress; Taichung's agreement lowers the strike risk without removing it. |
Recent Developments
| Date | Development | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Taiwan labour: Taichung agreement, global profit-linked bonus, Taoyuan open Taichung union signed a fiscal 2027 pay agreement on 21 October. A global quarterly bonus pool starts in fiscal 2027, tied to profit after tax less next quarter's planned capex, half cash and half shares; the share of profit is not disclosed. Taoyuan held a 24-hour warning strike on 22 October without halting lines and will put the latest proposal to members. Reading: Strike risk lower, recurring cost higher: our estimate puts the pool at 0.7% to 2.0% of fiscal 2027 EPS, and the base case deducts 2%. Without it the weighted value would be $1,075; the verdict is Buy either way. | High | |
| CXMT 4F2 server DRAM claim (competitor) No specifications, yields or customers disclosed; modules targeted before end-2026. CXMT guided to a nine-month profit swing on 19 October, and NVIDIA's chief executive said on 22 October that NVIDIA has an open mind on CXMT products. HSBC and Daiwa (15 October) expect limited price impact for two to three years (forecast). Reading: Still High on competitive position and still unproven; carried in the base-case multiple and the bear case. A named customer outside China would move the view down. | High | |
| Technology roadmap webinar 4F2 is not on the roadmap; 6F2 extended, 3D DRAM longer term. 1-delta reaches volume in the second half of 2027 with a mid-20% bit-density gain for DDR6, LPDDR6 and HBM5; G11 NAND above 400 layers ramps in the second half of 2027. Reading: A clear plan through 2027 that leaves CXMT's route untested by Micron; no change to estimates. | Medium | |
| Repurchase authorization raised to $35.16bn Total authorization of $35.16bn effective 9 December 2026; purchases are discretionary. Reading: Per-share support from December, already counted in net cash. | Medium | |
| Custom HBM4E with NVIDIA Micron is working with NVIDIA on a custom HBM4E for next-generation GPUs; volumes and timing not disclosed. Reading: Unsized; supports the Competitive Advantage score. | Medium | |
| Capacity timeline Idaho ID1 and Taiwan Tongluo mid-2027, Singapore HBM packaging early 2027, Idaho ID2 and Hiroshima late 2028, New York 2030. Reading: Locates the bear case from mid-2027 into 2028; no change in the period. | Medium |
Key Risks

| Cycle turn as capacity arrives, mid-2027 to 2028 | Medium | High | New fabs at Micron and peers land together; the bear case lives here. |
| AI spending funding stress | Medium | High | Buyers' spending plans now face questions on returns and financing; a pause would hit HBM orders first. |
| CXMT advances, including 4F2 server DRAM | Medium | High | No yields disclosed; NVIDIA has said it is open to CXMT products. |
| Rates and the multiple | Medium | Medium | 10-year Treasury at 4.96%; Fed meets 27-28 October. |
| Gap through the stop | Medium | Medium | The stop is 2.5 average ranges away; news can open the stock below it. |
| Taiwan labour action at Taoyuan | Low-Medium | Medium | Taichung settled; Taoyuan's warning strike did not halt lines. |
| Profit-linked pay | High | Low | A recurring cost that grows with profit; share not disclosed. |
Scenario Analysis
| Case | Probability | Fair Value | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bull | 22% | $1,554 | Shortage runs into 2028 and AI buyers keep funding capex; Taoyuan settles with no lost output and the bonus pool stays near 1%; CXMT stays in China. Fiscal 2028 EPS $230 at 6.5x plus $59 of net cash. |
| Base | 48% | $1,097 | Fiscal 2027 delivers consensus less 2% for the bonus pool; Taoyuan settles without a stoppage; CXMT ships small volumes, mostly in China. Fiscal 2027 EPS $173.0 at 6.0x plus $59 of net cash. |
| Bear | 30% | $654 | AI capex slows in 2027 as funding tightens, new capacity arrives and pricing rolls over; CXMT gains share; or a long Taoyuan stoppage. Fiscal 2028 EPS $85 at 7.0x, a trough multiple, plus $59 of net cash. |
The Case
The 22 October close of $856.49 broke the $860 closing stop, so the trade from the 16 October report is over. The fundamentals that set the verdict did not change: fiscal Q1 2027 is guided to $61.5bn of revenue, consensus fiscal 2027 EPS is $176.50 and the stock trades at 4.9 times it, with $59 a share of net cash. Taiwan strike risk fell after the Taichung agreement while a profit-linked bonus added a cost and AI funding became the larger question, so the Buy stands as a new half-size entry with a $735 stop on a close.
