Apple Inc. (AAPL)

NASDAQ: AAPL · Technology / Consumer Hardware & Digital Services

Updated

Rated Watchlist, with a fair value of $305.10 against a last close of $342 (-10.8% implied upside). China finally cleared Apple Intelligence and the iPhone Duo opened to strong orders, but at 35.7x next year's earnings the price already pays for both; interesting at $285-295.

Technical read (chart only): Conflicts as of Uptrend with price above a rising 50-day average, stronger than the fundamental case; watch closely, without changing the rating, for a close below the 50-day average near $325, while the $285-295 band sits on the 200-day average. The Watchlist verdict comes from the fundamentals alone. The technical read looks only at the price chart. It does not change the verdict or the score and only guides entry timing.

Composite score 69/100 (previous 71.2). Every factor is scored out of 10, ten always being the best outcome, including for risk.

Business Quality9/1016%unch.Unchanged. Installed base above 2.5bn active devices, Services attach and a June quarter with revenue up 16%.
Financial Strength9/1016%-1Down 1. Net cash of about $62bn is shrinking as buybacks run close to free cash flow; still far stronger than any peer.
Competitive Advantage8/1016%-1Down 1. Hardware lead intact and the Duo opens a new tier, but the AI layer leans on partners: Alibaba and Baidu in China, Meta's model on the Mac.
Management7/1010%unch.Unchanged. Ternus's first quarter as chief executive is reported on 2 November; supply forecasting fell short in the June quarter.
Growth Potential6/1016%unch.Unchanged. FY27 consensus EPS growth about 9%; the Duo and China AI add at the margin, the Pro price rise tests demand.

Risk (10 = lowest risk) (10 = lowest risk)6/1010%+1Up 1. China AI permits and settlement talks with the DOJ trim two policy risks; memory inflation and rates still weigh.

Recent Developments

DateDevelopmentImpact
iPhone Duo, first foldable iPhone

$1,999; pre-orders opened 16 October, in stores 23 October; supply tight. Early US delivery dates slipped into January (reported). Counterpoint expects about 6m shipped by year-end.

Reading: An early and weak signal, because supply is constrained. Our 4m-10m first-year range moves FY27 EPS by about plus or minus $0.08 against a 7m base.

High
Memory cost inflation into the December quarter

September-quarter gross margin guided to 47-48% including about one point of tariff refunds; TrendForce expects 4Q26 DRAM contracts up 10-15% and NAND up 15-20%.

Reading: Each point of product gross margin is worth about $0.22 of FY27 EPS; the base case assumes half a point is lost.

High
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at higher prices

On sale at $1,199 and $1,299, $100 above the prior Pro models. A cut of at least 15% in October Pro component orders was reported on 9 October and not confirmed; no further cut has been reported.

Reading: Still unresolved; the Duo's reception argues against weak demand at the top of the range. The 2 November guide is the test.

High
DOJ antitrust case

Early settlement talks reported since July; developer concern about the talks reported 16 October. No settlement announced.

Reading: A settlement would trim a Services overhang; terms are unknown.

Medium
Apple Intelligence cleared for mainland China

Registered by China's internet regulator in July 2026. MIIT issued updated network-access permits (reported to date from 29 September, reported 14 October) for the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and earlier models with Apple Intelligence and Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models. Executive chairman Tim Cook said in Shanghai on 15 October that a beta opens later in October with writing tools, live translation and Clean Up. A public December release with iOS 27.3 and Baidu's search role are reported, not confirmed. Siri AI is not included.

Reading: Closes a two-year gap in Apple's third-largest market, but the features are free and the older set. Our estimate: about $0.02 of FY27 EPS in the base case and $0.04 on success, worth $0.53 to $1.42 a share; it does not move the verdict or levels.

Medium
Home push: HomeView and Home Collection

$299 HomeView smart display with Siri AI in beta, on sale 13 November; Home Collection cameras, locks and thermostats with LG and Schneider from December, priced about $40-$400.

Reading: A new category inside a segment of about $36bn a year; small for FY27 earnings, useful for ecosystem breadth.

Medium
New EU app terms in force

Core Technology Fee replaced by a 5% commission; App Store in-app purchase rate 26%, 15% for small developers and renewals after year one.

Reading: Settles the dispute with the Commission at a modest cost to EU commission revenue.

Medium
Q4 FY2026 results date

Apple reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on 2 November 2026 after the close.

Reading: The December-quarter guide settles Pro demand and memory costs.

Low
Meta model on the Mac

Reported: Apple and Meta are working together so Meta's Muse model runs on Macs.

Reading: Shows Apple leaning on partners for AI models; no earnings effect.

The Case

Apple at $342.00 trades at 35.7 times estimated fiscal 2027 earnings, above the average analyst target. October brought good news: China issued the permits for Apple Intelligence with Alibaba's models and a beta opens this month, and the $1,999 iPhone Duo opened to strong pre-orders. Sized against earnings, both are small, with the China approval worth under 0.5% of fiscal 2027 EPS, so the case still turns on the multiple, memory costs and the 2 November guide. Fair value is $305.10; the rating stays Watchlist, with $285-295, on the 200-day average, the level where the name becomes interesting.
