Tesla Passed the Margin Test in Q3. The Price Still Leans on the Robotaxi

Tesla, Inc.TSLAReports

Tesla reported third-quarter results after the close on 21 October, and the rating moves to Watchlist from Avoid. The last report named one condition for that move before any fall in price: margins had to recover with volume intact. The automotive side of that test was met. The $386.47 close used throughout predates the results, and the shares traded lower after hours.

Four claims are doing the rounds. Each deserves a check against the numbers.

Myth: Tesla beat estimates across the board. Reality: it was a split quarter. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.48 beat the $0.45 consensus and gross margin reached 19.6% against 17.9% expected. Revenue of $28.05bn missed by about 1% and was flat on the year. GAAP EPS fell 44% to $0.22, and operating margin was 2.6% against 5.8% a year earlier, because operating expenses rose 39%.

Myth: the margin recovery is all one-offs. Reality: part of it is, but the most important part is not. Energy margin jumped to 33.1% from 20.4%, mainly on tariff refunds. Had it stayed at the earlier level, gross profit would have been roughly $0.37bn lower on the report’s own estimate. Automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits, however, rose to 18.1% from 16.3% in the second quarter and 15.4% a year ago, on deliveries down only 2%. That is the clean improvement.

Myth: the cash problem is solved. Reality: it is deferred. Free cash flow was $1.53bn against an expected outflow of $4.5bn, and management cut 2026 capital spending to about $20bn. It also said spending will rise again to fund the Robotaxi, Optimus, compute and a chip fab costing tens of billions.

Myth: the Robotaxi already justifies the price. Reality: it carries the price without yet earning money. Cybercabs have run in Austin since 3 September, and unsupervised miles rose eightfold in the quarter. Yet the company discloses no fleet size, paid miles or price per mile, and two federal reviews remain open. Even a strong 2027 would add about 1% to sales on the report’s sizing. Unsupervised driving in owners’ cars is pencilled in for “somewhere around” the second quarter of 2027.

The upgrade reflects a better core business, not a cheaper stock. At 229 times 2026 consensus earnings, the price sits about 13% above the $334.75 weighted fair value. The report sees the name becoming interesting between $300 and $340, where the base case pays, as long as the Robotaxi stays on track. The Investment Score rises to 52.5 from 47.6.
