Updated

Rated Watchlist, with a fair value of $334.75 against a last close of $386.47 (-13.4% implied upside). Tesla's third quarter met the margin test, with automotive gross margin excluding credits at 18.1% and free cash flow positive, which lifts the rating to Watchlist, but at 229 times 2026 earnings the price still sits about 13% above fair value and leans on a Robotaxi programme with no disclosed economics.

Recent Developments

DateDevelopmentImpact
Robotaxi and Cybercab programme

Cybercab rides in Austin since 3 September, 6am to midnight; nearly two million cumulative unsupervised miles, up eightfold in Q3; Cybercab line listed above 125,000 a year. NHTSA is reviewing the Cybercab self-certification and since 12 October has been evaluating a school-zone speeding petition covering about 1,000 vehicles. Management expects Dallas next month, customer Cybercabs by end-2026 and owner unsupervised FSD around Q2 2027.

Reading: Carries most of the valuation while its 2027 revenue is unlikely to reach 1% of sales; it shows up in the multiple, and a regulatory setback would cut the base value toward $164 on the same earnings.

High
FSD adoption

1.74m paid FSD customers, from 1.04m a year earlier; over 75% of North American deliveries signed up; available in nine EU countries. About $1bn of subscription ARR is an analyst figure the CFO called about right.

Reading: The clearest evidence of recurring software revenue; churn is undisclosed.

Medium
2026 capital spending cut to about $20bn

Q3 capex $4.73bn against $7.77bn expected; management expects spending to rise again for Robotaxi, Optimus, compute and a chip fab.

Reading: Drove the free cash flow beat; partly timing.

Medium
Optimus early production

Early production on the Fremont high-volume line; Texas plant under construction. Management expects customer deliveries around end-2027.

Reading: Option value beyond the horizon; no revenue before 2027.

Medium
Megafactory Texas and in-house LFP Megapacks

Megafactory Texas began production with 50 GWh planned capacity; first Megapacks on Tesla's own LFP cells shipped; record order rate and backlog. Management says Megapack is nearly sold out for 2027.

Reading: Supports the most profitable segment; Q3's 33.1% energy margin was lifted by tariff refunds.

Medium
SpaceX combination speculation

No proposal, committee or process disclosed; management declined to discuss it. Tesla holds a SpaceX stake bought for $2.0bn in Q1 2026.

Reading: A governance and related-party question until terms exist.

Medium
Tesla Semi volume production

Volume production began in Nevada; installed capacity 25,000 a year.

Reading: A new revenue line, small inside two years.

Scenario Analysis

CaseProbabilityFair ValueOutlook
Bull22%$566.94Cybercab certified without redesign and with customers on time, unsupervised FSD in owners' cars by mid-2027, Robotaxi revenue significant in H2 2027 and automotive margin ex-credits above 20%; 2028 EPS $4.90 at 140x, discounted two years at 10%.
Base50%$340.91Automotive margin ex-credits near 18% on modest volume growth, energy and FSD growing, Robotaxi spreading city by city but immaterial to revenue until late 2027, spending rising again in 2027; 2028 EPS $3.30 at 125x, discounted two years at 10%.
Bear28%$141.32A regulator forces a Cybercab redesign or caps deployment, unsupervised FSD slips again, margin falls back toward Q2 levels and opex keeps outrunning revenue; 2028 EPS $1.80 at 95x, discounted two years at 10%.

The Case

Would new money go into Tesla today? Not at $386.47, a close set before the results were released. The quarter delivered what the last report asked of the core business: automotive margin excluding credits recovered to 18.1%, free cash flow turned positive at $1.53bn and the 2026 spending plan came down to about $20bn, which earns a move to Watchlist.

The biggest concern is still the price, 229 times this year's expected earnings for a company with flat revenue and a 2.6% operating margin, with the gap filled by a Robotaxi programme that has no disclosed economics and two open federal reviews. The view improves at $300-$340, or with a fourth quarter that keeps the margin without one-offs and driverless service beyond Austin with paid miles disclosed.
