Scenario Analysis

CaseProbabilityFair ValueOutlook
Bull30%$291.90Software reaches double digits in Q4 and high single digits or better in 2027, Red Hat stays at double digits, the remaining slipped deals close and the January framework restates the double-digit target; 2027 EPS $13.90 at 21.0x.
Base52%$246.05Software near 7% for 2026 and 7-8% in 2027, transaction processing flat as guided, Consulting low single digits, free cash flow up a little over $1bn; 2027 EPS $13.30 at 18.5x.
Bear18%$192.75The third quarter proves a catch-up, transaction processing declines in 2027 as the z17 cycle ages, Consulting stalls and the January targets disappoint; 2027 EPS $12.85 at 15.0x.

The Case

Would new money go into IBM today? Not at $251.46, a close set before the results were released. The quarter answered the question this coverage has asked since July: about two-thirds of the slipped deals closed, Software grew 8.7% at constant currency and was narrowed to about 7-8% for the year, and free cash flow guidance went up.

The biggest concern is now the price, which rose 11.5% in the three weeks before the release to sit at the $250.21 weighted fair value, 19.1 times 2027 earnings for a company guiding 4-5% revenue growth. The view improves at $220-$230, or with a fourth quarter showing Software near double digits and a January framework that keeps the double-digit target. No company development drove the answer.
