Stock Analysis
Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN)
NASDAQ: AMZN · Consumer Discretionary / Cloud Infrastructure
Updated
Rated Watchlist, with a fair value of $285.90 against a last close of $248.23 (+15.2% implied upside). The shares spent two and a half weeks inside the $245-252 band the last note called buyable, but the averages behind that band moved overhead and fair value was cut again on memory and rate evidence, so Watchlist holds with the interesting price lowered to $238 ahead of 29 October results.

Investment Scorecard
Composite score 73/100 (previous 75). Every factor is scored out of 10, ten always being the best outcome, including for risk.
| Factor | Score | Weight | Change | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Business Quality | 9/10 | 15% | unch. | Three strong franchises: AWS, retail and a 26%-growth advertising business. |
| Financial Strength | 6/10 | 11% | -1 | Negative free cash flow now funded through new bond markets and, reportedly, chip leasebacks. |
| Competitive Advantage | 9/10 | 13% | unch. | Trainium, Graviton, the Qualcomm arrangement and a Synopsys custom-silicon IP deal. |
| Management | 8/10 | 11% | unch. | AWS reacceleration is genuine; headline EPS still leans on a mark-to-market gain. |
| Growth Potential | 9/10 | 16% | unch. | AWS +37% with a $496bn backlog; power and generator supply contracted into 2028. |
| Valuation | 6/10 | 16% | unch. | ~31.8x annualised clean earnings; price and fair value fell together again. |
| Risk (10 = lowest risk) | 5/10 | 13% | unch. | Memory tightness now guided through 2028 and the ten-year above 5.2%, held at 5 having been cut last time. |
| Technical Setup | 4/10 | 5% | -1 | Below the 20-, 50- and 100-day averages; MACD negative; holding above the 200-day. |
Recent Developments
| Date | Development | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Reported chip sale-and-leaseback vehicle Reported, not confirmed by Amazon: about $8bn of Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips in more than a dozen US data centres would move to a vehicle financed with debt and up to 10% equity, and be leased back. Reading: Would move part of the build cost from the capital line to operating lease expense rather than remove it; carries no weight in the verdict until confirmed. | Medium | |
| Long-dated infrastructure commitments (Generac, Constellation, Synopsys) Generac generator supply valued at up to $8bn with about $2.4bn of initial deliveries in 2027-28 (17 Sep); 20-year Calvert Cliffs PPA covering 690 MW including a 190 MW uprate due 2030-32 (30 Sep); Synopsys multi-year custom-silicon IP agreement above $1bn (30 Sep). Reading: Supports the growth case and backlog, but makes it harder to believe 2027 capex falls below the 2026 level, one of the two Buy conditions. | Medium | |
| Debut sterling bond Amazon priced £4.25bn of notes across four tranches of 3 to 19 years, roughly 2.5 times covered, following a $37bn US dollar deal in March. Reading: Sensible treasury diversification for an issuer of Amazon's quality, but further evidence that the capex gap is being filled externally as the cost of money rises. | Medium | |
| Anthropic listing Anthropic's confidential IPO filing was reported on 1 June; Amazon carried the stake at $190.4bn at 30 June. Listing timing and valuation remain reported only. Reading: Would set a market mark on a non-operating stake in either direction; excluded from clean earnings and from the verdict. | Medium | |
| Prime Big Deal Days, Kindle lineup, $1bn community fund Prime Big Deal Days set for 6-7 October; new Kindle lineup on 1 October; $1bn over five years for data-centre communities announced 2 October. Reading: Routine; the October event is the first read on a squeezed consumer in Amazon's own numbers. | Low | |
| 21 Air suspension Amazon suspended the cargo carrier after the fatal Miami runway overrun; a preliminary investigation report has been issued. Reading: Financially small; outcome of the investigation unknown. | Low |
Key Risks
| Risk | Probability | Severity | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory prices extending elevated capex into 2027 and beyond | High | High | Worse. A major supplier now guides supply tighter through 2028. |
| A pause in AI demand slowing enterprise cloud spending | Medium | High | Unchanged; the $496bn backlog is the principal mitigant. |
| Negative free cash flow against ~$220bn of capex | High | Medium | Unchanged in fact; financing cost higher and funding spreading to new channels. |
| Higher-for-longer rates compressing the multiple | Medium | Medium | Newly itemised. Fed hike on 16 September; ten-year above 5.2%. |
| Consumer slowdown hitting retail and advertising | Medium | Medium | Worse. Conference Board confidence at its lowest since 2014. |
| Competition in product discovery from AI agents | Medium | Medium | Unchanged. |
| Regulatory exposure across marketplace and cloud | Medium | Medium | Unchanged; FTC Prime settlement payments continuing. |
| Air network disruption from the 21 Air suspension | Low | Medium | Unchanged. |
| Earnings quality: the Anthropic gain is non-cash and reversible | High | Low | Unchanged; a listing would set a market mark in either direction. |
Scenario Analysis
| Case | Probability | Fair Value | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bull | 24% | $374 | AWS sustains 35%+ with margin near 40%, advertising compounds, memory pricing peaks in 2027 and free cash flow turns positive; multiple near 34x. FY27 clean EPS ~$11.00. |
| Base | 44% | $294.50 | AWS moderates toward 30%, operating leverage continues, capex plateaus near $220bn rather than falls; multiple near 31x with the ten-year above 5%. FY27 clean EPS ~$9.50. |
| Bear | 32% | $208 | An enterprise AI spending pause, memory keeps capex above $220bn through 2027, margin compresses and negative free cash flow extends; multiple de-rates toward 26x. FY27 clean EPS ~$8.00. |
The Case
Amazon has done what this coverage asked of its price, falling to $248 and holding inside the named band, but has not answered the question that price was meant to pay for. The capital programme still runs ahead of operating cash flow, a leading memory maker now guides tighter supply into 2028, and the funding is being raised in more places at a ten-year yield above 5.2%, so fair value fell with the price to $285.90.
The bull case is intact: AWS growing 37% with a widening margin, a $496 billion backlog, and power, generators and custom silicon contracted years ahead. The answer is dated: AWS growth and the first view of 2027 capex on 29 October will confirm one side, and until then the shares become interesting at about $238.
