SoFi Moves From Watchlist to Buy at Half Size After Yields Push It Into the Band

SoFi TechnologiesSOFIReports

SoFi Technologies is now rated Buy, up from Watchlist, at half of a normal position. For two reports running, the upgrade band was $15.50 to $16.50, and it was never moved to meet the price. The shares closed at $15.93 on 28 September, the first close inside it, and finished at $15.84 on 1 October, down 5.3% from $16.73 at the 17 September report.

What put the price in the band

Not the company. Its only material news was positive. On 22 September SoFi became the first national bank to settle its card program in its own SoFiUSD stablecoin on Mastercard’s network, a program expected to exceed $25bn of annualised volume. No economics were disclosed, and the earnings effect looks small.

The decline came from the bond market. The 10-year Treasury yield rose from 4.94% on 17 September to 5.29% on 30 September and closed at 5.24% on 1 October. On 28 September SoFi fell 3.9% with Affirm and Robinhood as yields climbed.

Why the call survives the rate move

Higher long rates are not neutral for a lender. They lower the value of loans carried at fair value and raise the discount rate on future earnings. The report therefore cuts fair value to $18.61 from $19.25, using bull, base and bear values of $25.65, $18.40 and $12.00, weighted 25/50/25. Even so, the expected return at $15.84 is about 17.5%, still meeting the band’s requirement. The price fell further than the value. The score edges up to 69 from 68: Valuation 5 to 6, Risk 5 to 4.

The levels

The ideal buy range is $15.00 to $15.95. The cut-loss is $14.45 on a daily close, below the $14.88 July low. Targets are $18.61 and $22.02. That sets about 17.5% of upside to the first target against 8.8% of downside to the stop, a 2.0 to 1 ratio. The bear case sits about 24% lower. Sizing is 1.0% to 1.5% of a portfolio, with the second half added only on a raised profit outlook or a visibly wider net interest margin.

Why only half

This is a narrow call. Third quarter results arrive on 27 October around 7am ET, the same day a two-day Fed meeting begins. The quarter ended with long yields near multi-decade highs, so a fair-value mark on the loan book is a real risk. Analysts remain split: 24 cover the stock, about half rate it Hold, and the average target is about $20.35. Citi reiterated Buy at $30 on 29 September, while KBW sits at Sell with a $16 target.

The fair value bridge and the rate sensitivity work appear in the latest SoFi Technologies (SOFI) report on our Reports page.
