Coherent Falls Through Its $263 Mark, but a $269 Fair Value Keeps It on the Watchlist

Coherent Corp.COHRReports

Coherent (COHR) closed at $250.60 on 15 October, down 15.3% from the $295.83 of the 27 September report and below the $263 level that report set for new money. Reaching that price has not made the stock a buy. The fair value it was measured against has dropped too, and the rating moves from Hold to Watchlist.

Hold is no longer a rating this coverage uses, so part of the change is a relabel: the stance is the same, with no new position at this price. The grounds have shifted, from a full price to a thin margin over a lower value.

The route down was abrupt. The shares rose to $338.36 on 6 October on reports of proposed US action against Chinese optical transceivers, then lost about 26% in seven sessions as AI infrastructure stocks sold off, touching $235.55 intraday on 15 October. No company announcement explains the decline.

The new report cuts its fiscal 2027 earnings estimate to $9.30 a share from $9.70, following company guidance, and lowers the base multiple to 30 times from 32. The bear case now carries 27% of the weight, up from 20%, on a new question over how the largest AI customers fund 2027-28 build-outs. Weighted fair value falls to $269.28 from $315, just 7.5% above the price. The investment score holds at 62.8, as a better valuation score offsets lower marks for growth and management.

The chart agrees with waiting. The price sits below its 200-day simple average of about $294, its 40-week average near $299 and its 200-day exponential average around $272, so none of those lines offers support. The new price of interest is $224, 20% below fair value and just above the late-July closing low of $222.05.

The results due after the close on 4 November are the next test. The central objection has always been cash. Operating cash flow for all of fiscal 2026 was $79.5m against $1.10bn of capital spending, leaving free cash flow near minus $1.02bn as inventory swelled. The report now sets the cash trigger on the September quarter alone: clearly positive operating cash flow with gross margin inside the 39.5% to 41.5% guide would argue for an upgrade even above $224. Another weak quarter with spending still rising would point toward Avoid.

Two October items were noted but not decisive. The PhotonLink co-packaged optics platform launched without a named customer, and the proposed curbs on Chinese transceivers remain reported rather than adopted. Institutional positioning for the June quarter reads Cautionary.
